Hair Hacks Every Woman Should Know

The hair is a woman’s crowning glory. We always make sure that our hair is in great condition before leaving the house. The appearance and condition of our hair can complete or ruin our look. Simple changes in how we deal with our hair can elevate our overall look.

Weekend-Hairstyle-Easy-Ponytail

Here are some useful hair hacks that every girl should know so that our crowning glory will always look stunning.

Curling your hair in the middle.

Most women make the mistake of curling the ends of their hair. This is not the right approach, we should curl from the middle of the hair. This way the curl stays longer and looks more natural. This technique also keeps your ends from being damaged through the use of intense heat. Experts actually try to skips curling the ends as much as possible.

Never condition your roots.

For people with thin and fine hair, conditioning the roots can make hair limp and lifeless. It also makes the roots oily, making the hair look greasy. Condition only the ends of your hair and skip the roots so that your hair will have more body and volume. Applying conditioner to your roots can also make the hair strands more prone to breakage.

Use oil in disguising split ends.

Do you constantly worry that your dry and damaged ends are visible? The solution is just on your vanity table. Applying oil to dry roots with split ends to conceal these and make the hair look healthier. Choose a lightweight hair serum that fits your hair type.

Choose your hair tie properly.

Women who love to work out experience having creases on their hair after going to the gym. For people with wavy or straight hair, use hair ties that offer no creases when used, instead of using a regular elastic band. When you use creaseless hair ties, you’ll see voluminous waves instead of unattractive-looking hair creases.

Condition your hair before showering.

For thick-haired girls, you can apply leave-in conditioner as you sleep because the longer it stays in your hair, the better the benefits. Before getting in the shower, lightly brush it first before rinsing it to remove tangles you get when you sleep. Then rinse and wash hair like you do. This way, you won’t get clumps when you shower and you have lesser chances of losing hair to those tangles.

Apply a DIY hair mask.

Why spend a ton of money on expensive hair products when you can make a hair mask in the comfort of your own home? Combine banana or avocado with some coconut oil and then mash everything together. Apply it to hair for a couple of minutes and then rinse. Another option is to put together honey and olive oil. This is great as a hydrating hair mask for dry hair.

Spray your bobby pins.

Sometimes, bobby pins can slip from their original positions. To keep them in place, spray the bobby pin with hairspray before setting them in your hair. This keeps the bobby pin in your hair and keeps your hairstyle secure.

Applying Foundation like A Pro

Foundation, like the name suggests, is the foundation or base of your makeup. Doesn’t matter is your winged eyeliner looks divine or your eye shadow looks pristine, if your foundation looks caked and streaked, then your overall makeup look is poorly executed.

As a makeup basic, we give you essential tips that even expert makeup artists do to achieve seamless and natural looking skin through foundation.

IMG_4319

The basics

Apply a healthy amount of moisturizer and primer on the skin before applying your foundation. These products make the skin the perfect canvas to apply foundation to. Make sure to gently massage the moisturizer and primer to the face.

The foundation color

Finding the correct color of the foundation that matches the skin tone perfectly is important. Makeup hides the imperfections and highlights your natural features. Using an ill-fitting foundation color either makes you look like a clown or a badly tanned person.

To get the perfect shade, match the foundation to the neck’s skin color, not the face. Keep your skin undertones in mind when choosing your foundation shade.

LOreal True Match Foundation (omnibus)

Mixing foundation with another product

Mixing your foundation with a creamy moisturizer makes for a better consistency, making it easier to blend. This also gives the skin a dewy, smooth finish- bringing your skin a natural glow.

You can also use products with a matte finish to be mixed with your foundation for a no-shine look. Mix products according to your preference.

Using the fingers or a brush?

Questions have been raised regarding the method of applying foundation. There is really no right or wrong answer to this because application depends on the formula. The only absolute thing is that the foundation should be massaged effectively to the skin to boost blood circulation, making the foundation melt and glide onto the pores.

Set your makeup

Setting your makeup is essential to make it last longer. However, dusting powder is not the only way to set your makeup. Face mists give a dose of hydration to the skin while giving it no makeup cakiness. Just hold the face mist a few inches from the face and mist the product on the skin in order for the makeup to hold longer.

Cinnamon: A Bad Breath Buster?

One of the things we examine when we meet a new person is if they are properly groomed. A stinky breath can make us want to take a step back and minimize contact with the other person at all cost. Unfortunately, it’s a common problem among people.

cinnamon-sticks-pixa

In situations when we badly need to refresh our breaths, we usually reach for the breath mints. However, studies show that mint does nothing to eliminate bad breath. The smell of mints only mask it. The hot new bad breath remedy people are talking about is cinnamon.

Cinnamon’s antibacterial properties destroy bacteria that causes the bad odor in the mouth, making it smell more pleasant. According to experts, research results state that people who regularly chew on cinnamon gum have 50 percent lesser oral bacteria than people who like to chew on mint.

Chewing on a cinnamon stick also has the same effect. The invigorating smell of cinnamon helps in fighting unpleasant-smelling breath.

You can turn it into a homemade mouthwash consisting of cinnamon, honey and lemon. Adding honey makes the mouthwash taste better so you can hold it longer in your mouth. Use Manuka honey if you have some at home otherwise, you can use regular honey. The lemon juice’s citrusy scent help with the nasty smell of bad breath.

If this is too complicated for you, the simple concoction of cinnamon sticks and water helps. Simply boil 4 to 5 cinnamon sticks in a cup of water for five minutes then you have your bad breath fighting mouthwash.

Does Technology Make Students Smarter?

The dawn of technological advances made things easier for all Singaporeans and the world. The impact of technology undoubtedly influenced our life but does it make our students smarter? According to a recent study conducted in Tokyo, computers and other technology do not improve the performance of the students.

iStock_000020859618_Small-452x300

Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) surveyed three quarters of students in different countries using computers at their schools. According to OECD, computers made no obvious improvement in results. Andreas Schleicher, the OECD education director, actually divulged that reduced learning outcomes are seen on students who frequently use computers at their school.

The report gauged the impact of technology through Pisa tests and other digital measuring skills that were taken by many countries around the world. The results further show that education systems which heavily invested and relied in information and communications have “no noticeable improvement” in the field of science, math and reading.

classroom-tech

For other schools here in Asia, smartphones and computers are not an integral part of the student’s everyday life and yet they are still considered high-achieving ones. For example, in South Korea, students only use computers for nine minutes and only eleven minutes in Hong Kong. This is just a portion of the fifty eight minutes computer use in Australia, forty two minutes in Greece and thirty nine minutes in Sweden.

With this, OECD urged the schools around the world to work with educators instead of relying on technology and communication as learning tools. The educators should maximize technology as a powerful tool. As for developers out there, they should create sophisticated software.

The Fear of Parenting and How to Manage it

As parents, we just want our kids to be good in whatever they do so they will not be left behind. We fear that if they do not do well in school, they will be left sweeping the floors and picking up garbage here in Singapore – which is not a pleasant sight at all.

16-parenting-mantras-to-get-you-through-your-day-16-parenting-mantras

This fear is common for parents and it is normal but if we let it guide our ways, our children will not become better. We have to face that fear and learn how to manage it. If our children got low scores particularly in math, we should not scorn them or compare them to other people or siblings. Think what it might do to their self-esteem.

The first thing parents do is to take away their child’s smartphone or ban internet use unless grades will be improved. We can just take away their phones because then we cannot contact them whenever they are out of our reach. So, the best thing is to swap it with an outdate phone so we can still contact them.

92000-600x399-parenting4

The second thing that we can do is go through their schoolwork and figure out the fundamentals that they need to pick for their level. There are different assessment books that we can consider. Of course, we need to consider their level before putting them into endless assessment books.

The last thing that we can do is commit an hour or two of our time to teach our children. Math especially needs plenty of practice and perhaps this is what we are missing. We can consider the things mentioned above or we can take the easy road and hire a tutor. Everything will depend on us.

Mini’s Camper Vans

For Singaporeans who love to stay outdoors and camping, they do not need to bring their bulky home trailers to make their experience successful. Camping can still be successful with just a mini. Mini featured three concept vehicles especially designed for campers and outdoor enthusiasts.

The vehicles will not be produced. Mini only encouraged the ability of designers to squeeze many features into a small space. So, here are the Minis that made the difference:

  • The Mini Clubvan Camper: The Mini Clubvan Camper is designed for the solo traveller. If we want to go out on a weekend and marvel over the beauty of nature comfortably, this is the thing. The van has a sleeping berth, extendable kitchenette with fridge and stove, TV, heater and roof that can be opened for star-gazing. There’s no toilet though but it will do.

  • The Mini Countryman ALL4 Camp: For people who want to camp ‘safari-style’, the Mini Countryman ALL4 Camp is the thing. This is strange looking since the tent is placed in the rooftop of the car. The tent is rigid enough so people can sleep on it. If not in use, the tent is folded in its storage box.
  • Cowley Caravan: The Cowley Caravan is intended for couples camping together. It weighs about three hundred kilograms and is towed by a car. It boasts of kitchen sink, fridge, gas stove and sleeping berth. It does not end there because Cowley Caravan also offers solar module charges that can power the TV, DVD and other audio equipment.

Hopefully Mini will realize that many people need the camper vans. Let us wait and see. This could have been great.

Will Our House be a Good Investment?

We finally decided to build a family. Before the thought of marriage, we consider our house first. Our family should have a place to grow and that means buying a house. We finally saved and bought a house but the next question is, will it be a good investment? Many Singaporeans firmly believe that a house is a good investment.

house_investment

They are not wrong but sometimes, we have to evaluate whether owning a house or renting it out is a good choice. Buying a house will probably be our largest purchase next to our cars that is why it should be thought carefully. The question whether our house will be a good investment or not depends. Do we actually want to be a homeowner or are we just doing what other people dictates us to do next?

Robert Kiyosaki shared some of his thoughts about good investment. Robert is a famous personal finance author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad. According to him, a good investment refers to something that can pay us more than what we paid for. His definition of asset and liability are easy to comprehend as well. He refers asset as “anything that puts money in our pocket” and liability as “anything that takes money out of our pocket”.

investment-at-home

Assets and liabilities define whether it is a good investment or not. In order to understand whether our house will be a good investment, we have to put it in the context of asset and liability. When we decide to have our house, we pay mortgage every month not to mention the insurance and the taxes. Even if the house is paid off, we still need to spend some money maintaining it and paying more insurance and taxes. This situation shows that a house “takes money out of our pocket” which is the definition of a liability.

However, there is home value appreciation. It can make our residence an asset but if the purchase is at the right time – but most of the time it is not. If we rent out the house, there are still expenses that we must pay but the difference is that we are not making the payments – our tenants will. Our tenants give us more each month. Now that house is an asset.

The question here now is where will we live? The secret is to look at our life and determine if we want to live in the same area 5 or 10 years from now. If we do not want to be locked down into one area all our lifetime, buying a house is impractical.
